Macedonians Win Three Councillor's Positions in Albanian Local Elections

October 15, 2003

At last Sunday’s local elections in Albania, the Macedonians from Mala Prespa won three from a total of thirteen councillor’s positions, while the mayor’s position was "lost" by 103 votes. The Organization for the Defense of the Rights of Macedonians in Albania, “Association Prespa”, whose registration into a political party is in progress, took part in the elections in a coalition with the Party for Human Rights and placed second with 716 votes won, right behind the ruling Socialists who won 819 votes. With this, the authentic Macedonian movement in Albania automatically received the right for one “parliamentary” position in the Regional council stationed in the city of Korcha, which is seen as a great accomplishment for the Macedonian movement in Albania.

The Association Prespa has about 300 members from the local inhabitants, with a 29 member Executive council, which satisfies the Albanian requirements for registration of a political party.

According to the Vise President of “Prespa”, Eftim Mitrevski: “We hope that for the next parliamentary elections we will become a factor for a coalition and election of our parliamentarian in the Albanian Parliament.”
