USA Calls On Greece to Respect Macedonian Minority

October 12, 2006

Source: Makfax

The United States of America has called upon Greece to respect the rights of its Macedonian, Albanian and Turkish minorities.

This was reported on Friday by Greek newspaper Eleftherotypia, stating that this stance has provoked a severe reaction by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The US call was addressed from Wednesday's OSCE meeting in Warsaw. US ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Clifford Bond, said that "the attitude in Greece towards people who belong to national minorities of Turks, Albanians and Macedonians continues to raise tensions".

According to the US diplomat, the strict abiding of the Lausanne Agreement prevents Albanians and Macedonians in Greece to be recognized as minorities.

Bond also mentioned racist incidents towards certain Roma communities, the newspaper reports.
