Macedonia and NATO

Protest Against Change of Constitutional Name

Under motto "Macedonia, Macedonian, Macedonians", a peaceful gathering against a change of Macedonia's constitutional name, as well as protection of Macedonian national and cultural identity was held late Wednesday in Skopje's center.
The protest began with the national anthem, followed by addresses of students-members of organization "Youth Knows", which organized the event together with a group of intellectuals.
No one must dare betray this people, this country, the name Macedonia. This country was called, is called, and will be called Macedonia. This generation has no right to renounce from the eternal name Macedonia, said protest organizers.
EFA strongly condemns Greece's continual destabilising and unfriendly behaviour

April 7, 2008:
Greece's decision to veto an initiation to the Republic of Macedonia to join NATO is an irresponsible act motivated by its refusal to recognise the existence of a distinct Macedonian ethnic identity in the Republic of Macedonia as well as in Greece.

Shame On Greece: Messing With Macedonia

April 3, 2008:
The Macedonians walked out of the NATO summit on Thursday and we can’t say we blame them. Croatia and Albania were granted membership in the western alliance at a leaders’ meeting in Bucharest, but Macedonia was barred for an absurd reason: Greece doesn’t like its name. That decision shames Greece and it dishonors NATO, which has far more serious problems and challenges to worry about.

The Republic Formerly Known As...

March 30, 2008:
New York Times: A mediator for the United Nations, Matthew Nimetz, has proposed a bunch of what strike us as totally acceptable compromises, most recently Republic of Macedonia (Skopje). In any case, that’s not the point. NATO membership is supposed to encourage and cement democratic standards in these new European states. The alliance will have to keep working — vigilantly — with the new members to ensure that that happens.

What’s In a Name?

March 30, 2008:
Antonio Milososki states exactly what we have been saying, Greece has a problem in recognizing its Macedonian minority and NOT the name!
"...But I think it is not about the name but about the Macedonian minority living in Greece. Greece is one of the rare countries of the EU that does not recognize the phrase 'minority rights.' They still have a concept of a pure nation—one state, one nation, one religion, one culture, everything Greek."

Ramsfeld: Greek Intimidation Tactics Getting Old

March 28, 2008:
Greece has threatened to issue a sole veto over Macedonia's entry because Macedonia refuses to change its country name. The future of the trans-Atlantic alliance -- and its credibility as the pre-eminent political and military instrument of the world's democracies -- are too important to be constrained by narrow disputes over semantics or to intimidation tactics more befitting the last century.

Several Promiment Former European Diplomats Make Statements About the Greek Conflict with Macedonia

March 20, 2008:
"It is absurd that Macedonians are even talking to the Greeks knowing that they have little chance of making progress in these unfair negotiations. Thanks to Greece's threat of veto and its irresponsible use of it as well as its position in NATO and the EU it has all the help it needs from the European Community to hold Macedonia back as long as it wants."

Macedonia Needs Full International Recognition for Its Name

March 14, 2008:
Financial Times: Greece should drop this approach. The hazards of confusing Macedonia with Greek Macedonia are nothing compared with the risks of instability in Macedonia. The country needs the confidence-boost that would come from full international recognition for its name. It is particularly dangerous that this row has flared when Macedonia, along with Croatia and Albania, is hoping to join Nato. It would be inexcusable if Macedonia lost out because of this unhelpful argument with Greece.
